FLIR Axx-Series Cameras Become the First UL 2684-Listed Thermal Imagers for Early Fire Detection

FLIR A40, A50, and A70 (Axx-Series) thermal imaging cameras achieved UL 2684 listing.

FLIR A-Series thermal imaging cameras are UL 2684 listed and prescriptive under NFPA 72:2025, and the FLIR A70 is the world’s first listed thermal imaging fire detector.

September 22, 2026 – Teledyne FLIR, part of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, announced that its FLIR A40, A50, and A70 (Axx-Series) thermal imaging cameras are the first models to achieve UL 2684 listing. This new classification brings certified early detection thermal imaging into code-compliant fire detection and alarm systems, significantly expanding early identification and response capabilities in the fire mitigation industry.

The UL 2684 listing lets engineers, system designers, and facility operators incorporate Axx-Series cameras into NFPA 72-compliant fire detection systems, expanding the role of thermal imaging beyond preventative maintenance and condition monitoring into certified early fire detection applications. By detecting abnormal heat signatures before smoke or flames develop, these cameras provide earlier warning of potential fire events, helping facilities respond more quickly while protecting people, property, and critical operations.

Unlike conventional smoke or heat detectors that generally respond after combustion has begun, Axx-Series cameras continuously monitor equipment, assets and large areas for developing thermal anomalies. When predefined alarm conditions are met, the cameras can initiate fire alarm events through compatible control systems, enabling faster response while helping reduce the risk of fire escalation. By using a single camera to monitor multiple assets or large areas, Axx-Series cameras simplify system design for data centers, warehouses and distribution centers, manufacturing facilities, utility and energy infrastructure, and other commercial and industrial applications requiring rapid thermal event detection.

UL 2684 listing marks a major milestone for the fire protection industry,” said Mattias Walan, General Manager of Advanced and Integrated Solutions at Teledyne FLIR. “For the first time, thermal imaging can be incorporated into code-compliant fire detection systems using cameras specifically evaluated to this standard. This gives engineers, system integrators, and end users a new tool for identifying developing fire risks earlier and protecting critical assets.

As a FLIR Premium Partner, Viper Imaging is pleased to share that FLIR’s Axx-Series cameras have achieved UL 2684 listing for early fire detection. These cameras are a key component of many of our industrial monitoring solutions, making this a significant milestone for Viper and the customers we serve.

FLIR Axx-Series cameras support a wide range of Viper’s industrial process monitoring solutions, including early fire detection in wood products facilities, battery energy storage systems (BESS), waste and recycling operations, data centers, oil and gas, and steel mills. Their versatility allows facilities to monitor developing fire risks alongside equipment condition and critical process temperatures.

UL listing carries real weight with our industrial customers, making this a significant milestone, said Andy Beck, Viper’s Vice President of Business Developent. At Viper Imaging, we frequently recommend and integrate FLIR Axx-Series cameras into our monitoring solutions. The UL 2684 listing adds independent validation for early fire detection, giving customers greater confidence as they evaluate technologies to help protect their people, equipment, and operations.
