Gas Leak Detection & Emissions Monitoring

Identify and quantify gas leaks quickly, accurately, and safely with Viper Imaging gas detection and emissions monitoring solutions.

From natural gas extraction to petrochemical operations and power generation, companies benefit greatly by relying on optical gas imaging (OGI) technology for inspection and maintenance. Leaks and fugitive emissions can occur as a result of aging assets, corrosion, mechanical failure, and other factors. Continuously monitor and proactively spot leaks with these powerful Viper solutions utilizing OGI.

Traditional sensors cannot respond to current safety and environmental challenges.

Viper systems utilize OGI cameras and quantification software to detect and quantify a variety of industrial gases. Let us help you find a solution for your application with our recommended fixed and portable OGI cameras.

Portable Detectors

The Opgal EyeCGas series of handheld thermal imagers are rated for hazardous areas and feature built-in gas quantification. Special filters allow these devices to “see” methane and other industrial gases which are invisible to the naked eye.

Handheld or portable OGI cameras are ideal for:

  • Natural gas well sites
  • Gas pipelines
  • Gas Storage facilities
  • Electrical substations (SF6)
  • Power generators
  • Chemical processing plants
  • Manufacturing plants

How it works: The camera detects a gas plume/cloud as a shadow that stands out against the thermal radiation from its surroundings. Built-in software colorizes the cloud and quantifies the mass flow rate of the leak.

An acoustic imaging camera can help locate pressurized leaks in compressed air systems or detect partial discharge from high-voltage electrical systems. We recommend the SDT SonaVu (pictured) and the FLIR Si124.

This lightweight, handheld solution can be used to identify issues up to 10 times faster than with traditional methods. Built with 100+ microphones, it produces a precise acoustic image that visually displays ultrasonic information.

With a lower price point than optical gas imaging (OGI) cameras, acoustic imaging can be used to visualize hydrogen and other industrial gases.

Fixed Monitoring Systems

Continuous monitoring provides immediate notification of a gas leak and real-time emissions quantification. Viper OGI systems can constantly monitor vital gas pipelines and installations in remote areas or zones with difficult accessibility. Rated for hazardous areas, these systems feature built-in gas quantification software.

Need to reduce Methane (CH4) emissions? The quantification capabilities of this intelligent monitoring system provide the PPM-m of identified leaks.

Fixed OGI installation is ideal for:

  • Offshore oil platforms
  • Natural gas processing plants
  • Biogas generation plants
  • Petrochemical facilities
  • High-value well sites
  • Underground storage facilities
  • Critical pipeline crossings

Fixed OGI System – Continuous monitoring for Methane, C02 and many other gases

  1. A ruggedized computer capable of withstanding high temperatures is included.
  2. Viper uses a lightweight aluminum electrical enclosure. It can be locked with a padlock.
  3. ViperVision software controls all camera functions, collects temperature data, displays thermal images with colorized gas plume, and provides quantification of gas leaks.
  4. High-speed 4G cellular communication is standard.
  5. Options for the control panel enclosure include a touch panel and an air conditioner (shown here). Heaters are installed for cold environments.
  6. OGI cameras are housed in ViperVenom EX enclosures. A Pan/Tilt mounting option is available. The camera’s digital data stream is connected wirelessly to the control system.

Biden Administration Plans to Tighten Methane Emissions Regulations

New regulations will require oil and gas operators to use remote sensing technology to identify and address large methane leaks and routinely monitor all well sites. Learn about the new regulations and how Viper can help. Read more >>
Methane Emissions

Why Reducing Methane Emissions is So Important

A recent report estimates the industry could reduce as much as 75% of methane emissions at little, no, or negative cost—meaning in some cases it could profit from doing something that would help the planet. Read more >>

Customer Installation

In this installation example, our customer needed continuous monitoring of three separate wells. With the Viper OGI system mounted on a pan/tilt, complete monitoring is achieved by a single camera.

System Solution Components

Viper Imaging gas leak detection and emissions monitoring solutions: OGI cameras are integrated with software that directly communicates with most industrial platform controllers. The software will analyze and compare the data against predefined parameters and will trigger an alarm if warranted. These parameters can be adjusted based on the specific application needs.

Fixed cameras are mounted in industrial camera enclosures that use the appropriate purge and pressurization to protect the camera equipment. Viper Imaging provides solutions for Class I and Class II environments that are Division 1 or 2.
